Traveling to Cuenca
Choose a Short Hop or a Long Haul

If you're thinking of traveling to Cuenca, you have several options. These include:

  • Flights from Quito and Guayaquil on one of three airlines that fly here.
  • Interprovincial buses from Quito, Guayaquil, Machala and Loja.
  • Intercantonal buses from the various towns outside of Cuenca.
  • Shared van trips from Guayaquil.
  • Car rentals.

Below you'll find links to pages that discuss each of these options. You'll also find a map to the Mariscal Lamar airport, below.

Flights from Quito and Guayaquil

There are three airlines that can fly you into Cuenca.

AeroGal

Tame

LAN Ecuador

Mariscal Lamar Airport

Cuenca's Lamar Airport is rumored to have been given permission to become an international airport. After some upgrading, you may be able to fly directly here from Miami, Houston or some other US destination. That would be a pleasure!

Arriving or Departing by Bus

Cuenca's bus terminal (the "terminal terrestre") is not far from the airport (a five minute walk), just down the road on Avenida España. Click here for information about Cuenca's terminal terrestre.

Google Maps has no map to the bus station, so use the one above. Just under the word "Cuenca Airport," you'll find the location on España where the terminal terrestre is located.

Guayaquil Travel by Van

If you're heading to Guayaquil, or plan to come to Cuenca from Ecuador's largest city, you can save some cash over the cost of flying by taking a van. The cost is currently $12 each way, and the trip takes about 3 hours.

The earlier you leave in the day, the better the chance that you'll see some spectacular scenery through Cajas National Park.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.

My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
