Teaching Online in Cuenca

by Donald P
(Tulsa, OK, USA)

I currently have two adjunct teaching positions at different colleges here. After spending 27 years in the construction industry, I decided I wanted to do something that was less strenuous and that I liked, so here I am with a Master's degree but no full-time job. In addition, I am being left with practically nothing following a divorce.

I reckon you could list me as one who is seeking a "bargain lifestyle," but I mostly just want to leave the rat race. I have begun applying for online adjunct jobs, which--according to what I've read here and elsehwere--should support me adequately there and still enable me to pay my student loans.

I'm not looking for extravagance. So, my question is whether the internet connections are available to allow me to teach online? And, I guess, whether you think my plan is feasible? I know little to no Spanish (I took a class in college a few years ago), but I'm willing to learn.

Hi Donald.

I can't say whether you'll be able to make a go of it here as I have no idea what your income will be.

Lulie teaches English online and currently does about 20 hours a week at $11 an hour. That, in and of itself, wouldn't be enough to support anyone without another job or a savings cushion.

But it wouldn't take much. And I expect that college teaching positions pay more than $11 an hour.

To live well here, you need at least $1,500 a month. If you want to live cheaply (no eating out, small apartment, etc.), you could do it for $1,000 a month.

Inflation is around 5%, so every year you'll need an extra $50-75 a month to keep pace.

Sharing Expenses
by: TCondon

I don't know if your constitution could handle it but you might explore sharing living expenses with another expat. That's what I'm going to do as soon as I find someone wanting to go to Cuenca and needing a shared situation.

You have a Master's (so do I) and it may look good on a CV but you need to learn how to teach English as a second language. You can't just walk into a school and expect them to say, "Well, since you have a Master's Degree, of COURSE you'd be qualified!"

And even THEN, if you WERE hired, what would your curriculum look like? Where are your reference books?

Going to TESL classes is EXPENSIVE, especially for someone who has had major challenges as you've had. It takes a MINIMUM of 3 months and a lot of self-discipline to do an online course.

Good luck!

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.

My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
