SWF Hoping to Retire to Cuenca

by Ruby
(Toronto, Ontario)

Your articles have been greatly appreciated by me. I want to move to Cuenca (eventually) but have been concerned about safety issues.

I appreciate that no matter where we go there are safety issues. Using common sense can alleviate many of the problems.

I intend to learn some Spanish before moving as I have some Spanish friends. Making friends with locals is also on my agenda.

I am looking forward to visiting first then making arrangements to move to this beautiful country.

Why not take advantage of the helpfulness of the Cuencans and enjoy your new life in a new country as one of its citizens not as a long-term, visiting gringo/gringa?

An Ecuadorian American Returning
by: imnotlikethat0@gmail.com

Cuenca in itself has been going through a period of positive change. I just arrived with the possibility of staying, and although I lived here as a child, I'd forgotten how different the culture is to the American culture which I got used to for 19 years.

Most people are fully aware of their responsibilities of recycling their trash now, taking care of their lawns, and other aspects that make Cuenca citizens perhaps the most educated in the whole country. I might be exaggerating but I can see collectively a change in their attitudes.

One thing I find a little difficult is to find a job. I have enough money to live for a little while but not enough to fully retire. Either way, I would like to work. I'm still in my early 30's and I find few challenges in Cuenca.

I still would recommend Cuenca and its beauty and amazing weather, which is so much better than what I was used to in Texas. Yes, Cuenca and the big cities of Texas are polar opposites. Although I'm culturally divided, I'm starting to fancy this place little by little.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.

My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
