Puntonet Internet Service
For Those Without Cable Wiring

If you don't have access to cable internet, Puntonet internet service may be just what you need, especially if your house isn't wired for telephones either.

Puntonet offers both ADSL (over phone wires) and wifi internet, so you can receive ADSL speeds up to 2 Mbits/sec, or Wifi of 2 Mb/sec, shared with 5 others.

PuntoHome ADSL Service

The ADSL service varies from as slow as 220 Kb/sec for $22.90 per month plus tax to 2 Mb/sec for $109.90 plus tax. Installation is $50. If you want to buy a wireless router, it's $34.90 plus tax. Up to three computers can use your subscription.

The prices we were quoted are considerably cheaper than the ones listed on the website (40% less!). Ask what the most current prices are. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Most ADSL service in Ecuador is shared (that's the case with ETAPAOnline, which splits the service among 8 subscribers).

But nowhere on the ADSL page for the Puntonet internet service does it mention sharing. So this ends up as a pretty good deal. Especially since you don't need to have ETAPA phone service to have Puntonet internet service.

We have Puntonet's ADSL service as a backup to ETAPAOnline, and our cost is well below the prices listed on this Puntonet ADSL page. For example, we paid only $35 for installation, nothing for the wireless router, and received a 5% discount over the monthly (already discounted) price.

So be sure to ask for any specials (promociones) they may have at the time you're looking.

Wifi Service

The broadband wifi service comes to your home via an antenna on the outside of the house or apartment building (ask for permission first!). The technicians set up everything to ensure that the antenna receives the signal.

From the antenna to your computer, the system runs over wires. If you want more than one computer on the system, or want portability inside or outside your home, you'll need a wireless router. Puntonet currently offers one for $34.90 plus tax.

One important difference between the wifi and ADSL systems is that the wifi version has the same download and upload speeds. So if you upload a lot of files, or use Skype or MagicJack a lot, you can get by with a lower speed than with the ADSL (but remember that you're sharing the signal with 5 other subscribers).

You'll probably want at least 800/800 (800 Kb/sec or .8 Mb/sec at $42.90 plus tax) if you need fast upload speeds, or if you need fast download speeds for videos, etc.

The prices range from $22.90 plus tax for 300/300 up to $94.90 plus tax for 2000/2000 (2 Mb/sec down and up). Installation is $50.

For more information, see this Puntonet wifi page.

Payment

Payments are made by direct debit from your account, so you'll need a bank account at a bank or credit union here in Ecuador.

Summary

Puntonet internet service is a valuable addition to Cuenca's options, especially if you don't have cable wiring and don't have phone wiring in your home.

With a choice of ADSL (over phone wires) or wifi (from an antenna) at reasonable prices, Puntonet offers you the chance to get connected with your friends and family without breaking the bank.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.

My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
