Posada del Angel, located just a few minutes' walk from Cuenca's Parque Calderón and from El Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno, is a warm, bright and inviting guesthouse.

The outside is painted in yellows and blues, reminding one of Italy or France. Enter and you'll feel as comfortable as any home away from home can feel.

Posada del Angel means Inn (or Guesthouse) of the Angel in English. And the owners continue the angel motif throughout the building in the artwork adorning the walls.

Listed in just about every Ecuador travel site, and known in every travel agency, as one of the best hostals in Cuenca, after just nine years in business, this 1890s restored colonial home is special. Unusual for a colonial home, this one has fourth and fifth floors (most colonials only go to three floors).

The owners, formerly of Argentina, have done a wonderful job restoring this building.

The Public Areas of Posada del Angel

The blues and yellows on the outside are continued on the inside, highlighting the details around all the doors and windows, with a few red highlights that make the whole place come alive.

The balconies overlooking the two covered courtyards lead to several sitting areas. Take a moment to take in the old wood floors as you walk to your room.

The main courtyard has several comfortable couches, as do the sitting areas upstairs.

Unlike many of the other visitor accommodations in restored colonials, Posada del Angel's restaurant, Mangiare Bene, is not located in the courtyard. It's off to one side, with entrances from the street and the courtyard. More on the restaurant below.

You'll also find an addition in the back, where breakfast is served in the second courtyard, which is full of country artifacts. The addition contains extra rooms.

Dining at Posada del Angel

Mangiare Bene Restaurant

Mangiare Bene is an Italian pasta restaurant with a modern decor, which is a definite contrast to the old look of the hostal itself. With a partially open kitchen, you can watch the cooks prepare your meal.

The focus is on several types of pasta. Each is available with one of a dozen or sauces. A chicken filet and beef medallions are also available.

In addition, you can enjoy lasagna and raviolon (a delicious blend of cheese, chicken and nuts in pasta) as well as several salads.

They have a wide range of wines, with a very good house wine available for just $1.80 per glass.

Services

Internet is available, as is wireless internet if you bring your own laptop. Parking is also available.

The staff of Posada del Angel Hostal will gladly arrange to have your laundry done for a small additional cost.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.

My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
