Internet Cafe

Hi Jeff,
Are there any internet cafes?

I don't want to lug my Mac Book Pro around if I don't have to.

Would prefer to travel light and just use a computer in an internet cafe if they exist.

Could I use my iphone internet capabilities in Cuenca? I know that the phone would not work but what about the internet part?

Thanks
Tom G

Hi Tom. Great questions!

There are many internet cafes in Cuenca (I wouldn't be surprised if the number was in the hundreds). But they all use Spanish keyboards, which are very different from our standard US keyboard.

So you may want to haul your MacBook around with you. Most hotels and hostels offer wifi, or a computer with internet access.

The wireless part of the iPhone will work fine here. If you're planning on moving here, you can also have it unlocked for $14-$20 and then buy a chip from Porta or Movistar and have full 3.5G internet capability.

Cell Phone Unlock
by: Jim S

To my surprise during a conversation with Verizon (Global Division) for some problem I was having with my Blackberry, I was provided with the unlock codes and was even walked through the procedure to unlock both of our blackberrys.

I explained tha we were moving to Ecuador and would be buying out our contract. The tech told me there was no problem unlocking them as no other service would be able to provide service (in the states) until Verizon release the phone.

Now all I have to do is buy a Porta sim card and the phones will work in EC. Might be worth a call to other service providers here in the states to have unlocked.

Thanks Jeff

I will leave my mbp at home in the US. Use internet cafe's.
Looked up the keyboard differences it's not that bad.

I will read my email on my iphone and do some surfing when I have wireless. On moving to EC I will unlock the phone and use Porta.
See you next month.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect. My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
