On the edge of the historic part of Cuenca's downtown sits Hotel Boutique Carvallo.

This building, from near the end of the 19th century, has a majestic charm that only a careful and detailed restoration could give to it.

This beauty, which opened in 2002, has an elegance that will appeal to many foreign visitors who want to stay downtown in luxury. It's definitely not a hotel for the budget-minded.

The Public Areas of Hotel Boutique Carvallo

The hotel's courtyard is large and well appointed, with a few sitting areas, some under the glass roof.

Others are under the interior balconies that provide a wonderful view of the first floor.

There are also several sitting rooms in this three story hotel.

Many of the walls (and the halls) have art on display. Many of these works are for sale by the artists, most of whom are related to the family that owns the hotel.

One issue people report is the squeaky floor boards, so if you're a light sleeper, you may have problems here.

The 30 rooms are very clean with comfortable beds and very nice furnishings. It's clear that the owners and the staff care about this hotel from the care they take in preserving everything.

But they should care, for the prices they charge for the rooms:

• A single (sencilla) is $110 per night.
• A double (doble) is also $110 per night. Choose from two twins or two double beds.
• A junior suite, with two twin beds, is $183 per night.
• A suite, with one king bed, an entrance hall and a minibar, is $244 per night.

Cable TV is also available in every room, as is an alarm clock radio and a hair dryer. Direct dial telephones are also in every room. Rooms are carpeted.

And for some, the climate control system might be very important, as it can be chilly in Cuenca at night.

Some of the rooms are small and dark, so if they're not fully booked, ask to see some of the rooms or suites in your price range before you pick one.

The hotel provides an American breakfast as part of your room rate.

Room service is available 24 hours a day, and the cafeteria is open 24 hours a day as well.

You'll also receive a box lunch to take with you on your day's travels.

The hotel offers wifi in every room, along with a business center.

There's also a meeting area that will hold 30 for an elegant party or a business meeting, and a patio that holds 35.

Complimentary coffee is served in all the public areas of the hotel.
