Hostal Casa del Barranco

Hostal Casa del Barranco owner

We met Ruth Luna at her family home, now Hostal Casa del Barranco, which is located on Calle Larga high above Tomebamba River.

Ruth showed us around this restored home, which is a spectacular place to view southern Cuenca (New Town) and the range of mountains surrounding the city.

Ruth's husband, Olmedo, is an architect. He restored the house and designed the lower cafe.

The Public Areas of Hostal Casa del Barranco

There are two small covered courtyards in the center of the building.

The corridor to the rooms is lined with plants. It also extends to the breakfast area, where those spectacular views are waiting for you (the image on the left has a view of the southeast).

Olmedo's cafe is located below the breakfast area. It's a great little getaway, perched on the side of the cliff above the river.

From the cafe, there's a stairway that leads down to the river. It's steep, so watch your step!

The Rooms in Hostal Casa del Barranco

Hostal Casa del Barranco guest room

Every room is clean, nice and comfortable. They're all somewhat remodeled, bringing things up to more modern standards.

Each room comes with a private bathroom, a telephone, and cable TV. All the rooms are non-smoking.

As a bonus, part of the hostel is an alcohol-free area. So the partying should be at a minimum in that area.

Rates are $18 for a single, $27 for a double (two beds). A queen room (called a "matrimonial" in Ecuador) is also $27. A triple (three beds) is $41 and a quad is $50. There's also a suite for $56 per night. Dining at Hostal Casa del Barranco

Breakfast is served daily. No other meal is available.

Wireless internet is available through Hostal Casa del Barranco. They also have an internet computer for those without a notebook/iPad/etc.

Testimonials

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect. My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
