The one Gran Akí supermarket in Cuenca has much of the variety of Supermaxi stores (its "big sister"), including some "no name" or store-brand products, with cheaper prices. It also sells clothes and household items.

The Gran Akí store has a deli of sorts, where you can have a pound or two of ham or other lunch meats cut for you. But that's about the extent of the deli.
The meat section has a good variety of meats, and the produce department carries many of the items found at Supermaxi.
You'll also find pretty much the same cleaning, personal hygiene and pet products, and the same grains, canned goods and other foods as at Supermaxi, just fewer of each item.
Gran Akí saves money on labor by placing most of the shelf items in the bulk packaging it arrives in. So you may need to do some digging to come up with an item you want.
The prices here are a bit lower, on average, than the Supermaxi affiliate card prices, so if you're on a budget and need items that you can't find at one of the Coral Hipermercados (fresh asparagus, for example), Gran Akí is the place to shop.
Gran Akí is located on González Suárez, about 100 yards west (towards downtown) from Monay Shopping, where one of the Coral stores is located. Bus 50 or Bus 3 from the west end will get you there, as will Bus 15 and several others from various locations in Cuenca.
Gran Akí is a good place to shop if you want to keep your costs down, but don't want to shop at the indigenous mercados for everything.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.
When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.
My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)
Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
