There are many options for short-visit accommodations in Cuenca—hotels, hostels (or, as they're called in Spanish, hostals or hostales) and posadas.
By North American standards, just about all of them are reasonably priced, starting at $8-$10 per person in the hostels, up to about $75 per night (a few cost more) for two people in the hotels. The truly exceptional are in the $200+ per night range.
In Cuenca, as in the rest of Ecuador, short-term accommodations don't always have the same amenities as North American or European accommodations. For example, many Cuenca hotels are restored colonial homes. Some are even historic landmarks, where laws restrict the changes that can be made to the building itself. So the owners may have had to do something unusual, like put the shower stall in the room itself instead of in the small bathroom.
And none of the colonial hotels, and very few of the hostels, have elevators. You'll be walking up and down stairs.
In the cheaper accommodations, you may have to share a bathroom with other guests.
One thing's for certain, though. With all the old buildings converted to hotels and posadas, they're certainly more beautiful than your typical North American hotel...

Below is a list of the Cuenca hotels, hostels and posadas that we've reviewed. We don't just read their brochure or visit their web site. We visit the hotel itself, interview the staff, and take our own photographs.
There a lot of these establishments here in Cuenca, so we're always adding to this list. Be sure to come back regularly to see what else we've added.
If there's a Google Map available for the hotel or hostel, we've included it on the page about that establishment. Some are very new, so they don't yet have a map.

Testimonials
I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.
When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect. My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)
Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
