Have some time to see the sights on the way to or from Guayaquil. A Cuenca-Guayaquil van service can offer you a cheaper way to travel and see some spectacular mountain scenery along the way.
These passenger vans (furgonetas in Spanish) travel through Cajas National Park, climbing to about 13,000 feet. Leaving from Guayaquil, they travel through a stretch of the coastal lowlands, where you'll see mango trees, and banana/plantain plantations by the dozen.
Then they start a long climb to the continental divide, where the water starts to flow eastward to the Amazon and the Atlantic Ocean.
The cost, at this time, is $12 with all the van services. And they all leave from both Cuenca and Guayaquil (at the time of writing) every hour on the hour, from about 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.
We definitely recommend reservations since each van holds only 7 people, plus luggage. If you need to be at the Guayaquil airport, or just don't want to sit around waiting, make a reservation. If you can't make a reservation, all the companies are within a few minutes of each other on foot. You may be able to find one with room in the next van.
We've taken a few of the Cuenca-Guayaquil van services, and this is the one we like best and find most professional:
Operazuaytur
You'll find Operazuaytur on Remigio Crespo one block from the Feria Libre traffic circle in Cuenca. The phone number is 07-2884814, cellular 09-9340970.
In Guayaquil, it's on Avenida de las Américas at the corner where it meets the entrance to Bahia Norte. It's in Block C of the row of businesses there. The phone number is 04-2130837, cellular 09-9341009.
They also have a web site at www.operazuaytur.com.
If you have the time and want to see some of the mountain scenery, or you're on a midrange budget and don't want to fly, you'll find one of the Cuenca-Guayaquil van services just what you're looking for.
You'll travel in air conditioned comfort through the hot lowlands, reaching your destination in about three hours.

Testimonials
I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.
When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect. My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)
Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
