Finding the Right Accommodations

Congratulations! You've decided that you want to stay here in Cuenca for a few months (or longer, maybe even permanently). Now comes the hard part, finding the right condo or apartment rental.

Your Circumstances and Desires

There are several decisions you need to make, based on your circumstances and your desires:

• The most important question is, how long are you staying?
  
  If you'll only be here for 3-6 months, renting a furnished place is the right choice for you. You don't want to be spending thousands on furnishings that you won't need in a few months.
  
  However, if you're moving here, but don't want to buy (or want to buy much later), then you'll find it cheaper over the long term to rent unfurnished and buy everything you need.
  
  This is especially true if you're planning to buy (or bought pre-construction) and will use the furnishings you purchase now in the new home.
• Do you want a place that's more like a North American apartment, or can you live with some of the things you'll find in a typical Ecuadorian apartment? (We'll discuss them.)
• Do you want to live downtown, or do you want to live in a less congested area of Cuenca?
• Do you want a balcony or terrace?
• Do you want a large apartment (three bedrooms or more, over 1,000 square feet/100 square meters) or a small one (one or two bedrooms)?
• Do you want full-time security in the building or at the front gate?
• Do you need a landline phone? High-speed internet? Cable TV?
