Artists on Calle Larga
Cuenca's Storefront Artists

If you like to get to know the artists whose work you purchase, then you'll enjoy checking out the artists on Calle Larga in Cuenca.

This popular street hosts many storefront artists, many of whom create their art right there in the shop. Here are a few of the artists you'll meet.

Carlos Guanuquiza of Color Arte Fuego

Carlos's gallery/shop is small, but it holds a deliciously tempting array of colorful ceramics that are so lively and fun that you'll have a hard time picking just one.

He has many pieces with beautiful scenes from around the city. He also makes them to order.

If you're going to be in Cuenca for a while, Carlo also teaches ceramics classes in his shop at 5-70 Calle Larga, at Hermano Miguel.

J.G. of Artes J.G.

Next to El Museo de las Custuras Aborígenes (the Cultural Museum of Indigenous Arts), at Calle Larga 5-48, is a small shop where J.G. displays his artistic talents.

He creates petrified wood sculptures, pipes, silver jewelry, small paintings and other objects of interest in various media.

J.G. (Jorge González) works daily in the small loft above the shop. He's ready to help you find something special as a gift or personal treasure.

Christian Leon G.

Just past the Cultural Museum of Indigenous Art is a small entrance to a house turned artist's studio.

The day we arrived, the children in Christian Leon's summer art program were just finishing up a few projects. They included clay faces and drawings of animals.

Some of Christian's own larger works were also on display.

Christian shares the house with another artist, who is a painter working primarily in oils. His paintings are on display along with Christian's work.

Other Artists

Also on Calle Larga are Galería Cerámica Galaxcy (no, that's not a typo) and, right across the street, a metal worker who does some interesting work, including the bicycle table below.

Testimonials

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect. My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
