Are There Recreational Facilities in Cuenca?

Are there any martial arts studios, gyms, squash courts, yoga studios, football pitches in Cuenca?

Hi Peter.

Thanks for your question.

For a city of 400,000+, Cuenca is probably underserved in terms of sports facilities. Except for soccer (football) of course.

There are a lot of gyms here, ranging from not worth it to almost state-of-the-art.

There are a few gringos attending yoga classes, but many of them are put on by other expats. There aren't many yoga studios.

There are a few martial arts places as well.

Many parks have a setup for volleyball, which is very popular here. You won't catch me playing it on most courts, because they're usually asphalt or concrete.

Finally, a lot of the newer, larger condo buildings have an exercise equipment room, with ellipticals, treadmill, weights, etc.

With all of the above, and the miles-long riverside parks, where a lot of people run, you likely won't have any shortage of exercise opportunities.

Sporting facilities
by: Dano

I've seen many martial art studios here but I don't know anything more than that they exist. There is a large sporting center off of Unidad Nacional that contains a true-Olympic sized pool with 9 lanes, a separate diving pool with 3 platforms, racquetball, rock climbing wall, tennis courts, soccer field, and basketball courts. In the same complex is the Coliseum for professional basketball.

Most gyms I've seen are well-equipped but typically don't have showers, saunas, pools, etc. Besides numerous volleyball sites, many people run along the many riverside paths.

In another sporting center in the Totaracocha area is a velodrome and more amenities.

Free Citywide Classes
by: wah1956

If you head out and about to the city's parks in the evenings, you may well find all kinds of classes - and they're free. The city puts them on between the hours of 9am and 6pm, if memory serves, spontaneously, in different places - yes, the middle of the night, all night long. There's no schedule anywhere; you just have to go looking for them.

Note: This comment originally said the hours were 9 pm to 6 am. That's so obviously wrong I don't know why I missed it. But a reader with a keener eye than mine noted it, and I've made the change to the correct hours.

Thanks for your answer Jeff - much appreciated.

One more thing tho if you would..

Do you happen to know what types (style -- karate, judo, etc.) of martial arts studios that are in Cuenca?

Again thanks...

I know I've seen judo and karate places, but I can't remember where I saw them. As for others, there might be one or two.

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect.

My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
