Any decent job opportunities for IT guys in Cuenca?

I hear that you're a programmer, Jeff. I am too, but mostly IBM mainframe work. Any decent job opportunities for IT guys in Cuenca, or should I just gracefully retire?

I'm not a programmer (don't have the head for it). I'm a technical writer for a web software company in Canada, working over the Internet. I recommend that you look into opportunities like that. After all, how many programmers ever work on the employer's premises?

Your other option is to improve your Spanish, form a business here, and then hire yourself out as a freelance programmer or IT guy.

You can then acquire a business visa, which will allow you to come and go as you please. No time limitations like there are with investment and retirement visas.

In other words, there's no need to gracefully retire, if you don't want to. You should be able to work various IT jobs from here. Internet connections in the cities, including Cuenca, are fast enough and reliable enough that you can do just about any job from home.

Jeff,

We have almost no privacy left in the US. Are things any better in Ecuador?

*****

Hi John. Thanks for the question. I'd say things are a little better here, if only because communications aren't nearly as good here.

Everyone has a censo (national migration card, which means they want to know where you live) and a cedula (the national ID card, which is required for just about everything, including buying large purchases at hardware stores!! And baking soda, which is now a controlled substance because it's used for making cocaine.).

But you can often talk your way out of certain situations with some cash, especially if there's no paperwork involved.

And you'll always stand out, so you may come under more scrutiny. But most of the expats here don't seem to have been bothered with lack of privacy.

Jeff

I just want to thank you both soooo much for creating this web site. I am originally from Cuenca but moved to New York 11 years ago and have not being back since. My husband and I are planning on visiting Cuenca over the Summer and this web site has helped me a lot.

When I came to the US we still had the "sucre," the bus ride cost 1,000 sucres and a pack of trident gum would cost 3,000 sucres. I am very nervous to go back, but thanks to your web site I now know what to expect. My husband is American and Captivating Cuenca has taught him a lot about what my great city has to offer, things that I had forgotten about myself! :)

Thank You both so much! I cannot wait to visit Cuenca!!
